Maternity Sessions: What to expect & why they're so important

I love maternity sessions.

Each mother has a unique story and her own hopes and dreams for the tiny life inside her. Many of us will only experience this time in our lives just once or twice, and it passes so quickly, even if some days feel like they drag on. Morning sickness may get the best of our first (and sometimes second) trimester and our skin may be less than glowing.  But swollen ankles aside, pregnancy is beautiful and I love capturing this stage of life for women.

And, it's so incredibly important. I often will hear women say they wished they had maternity photos done.  But, more often than that I will hear it from their adult children. I myself wish I had photographs of my mother pregnant with me. I have just one faded polaroid from her pregnancy with my older brother. And, I cherish it.

This mother delivered four weeks early with her first, missing her maternity session by just two days. It was an honor to capture this time in her life, carrying her second child.

I want to share a bit with you on what to expect when you book a session with me.

When you book your maternity session I will send an email with a few questions so I can get to know you and the first consultation is always free - by email, phone or at a local coffee shop. I have a collection of dresses, hair accessories, floral crowns and jewelry available for my clients to use and I'm happy to discuss style leading up to your session.  I don't often use props, however I always bring a blanket or quilt hand picked for your session.

I recently purchased this lace dress from Gypsy Vintage-Chic Market in Lincoln. It has the perfect amount of stretch to fit women before, after and during pregnancy.

I'm always scouting out new locations that fit the season, type of session, and personality of my clients. I can make suggestions on where to shoot, or we can do sessions in the comfort of your own home. For this mama we took advantage of the warm weather and headed down to a nearby creek in Loomis. I brought some of my favorite pieces from my client wardrobe and one of my most loved quilts that not only created a colorful backdrop, but doubled as a soft seat for sitting poses.

Maternity Sessions start at $350 and include a collection of professionally edited, high resolution images, a print release and online gallery to share with family and friends.

Using items from my client wardrobe, location scouting, custom retouching and personalized service is all included in my session fee and is what makes my service unique. I feel honored to be chosen as the photographer documenting this incredible moment in your life and I greatly enjoy passing these images over to the families I work with.
